Aspartame is used in many foods and drinks globally. Unfortunately many are unaware of the side effects that can result from increased ingestion of aspartame to your health.
Aspartame was discovered in 1965 by a chemist called James Schlatter. It is a non- saccharide, artificial sweetener. Sugar free foods have been popular due to their low calorie content. However, focusing on calories rather than nutrition can have a detrimental effect on your health.
Aspartame cannot be used in baking or cooking since it is sensitive to heat. Once ingested aspartame breaks down into aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol and further breaks down into formaldehyde, formic acid and diketopiperazine.
There have been many lab tests that have been conducted. Carcinogenicity studies have shown an increase in cancer, lymphomas and leukemia.
Before you decide to go sugar free, read the labels, many soft drinks contain artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and can result in many side effects that you may not have attributed to that “one drink” you had. Common side effects can range from the below symptoms:
Headaches
Dizziness
Reflux
Depression
Weight Gain
Deficiencies
Unfortunately there are many “fad” diets and we are losing the concept of true clean eating. Sugar is the new enemy and fat is the new “goodie”. What happened to moderation and staying away from unhealthy refined and artificial foods?
The key to a healthy lifestyle is to eat clean foods and a range of foods. No food group should be eliminated.
