Researching “new products” that are natural, organic and side effect free is at the forefront of Maya’s Organic World. Exploring plant products as new chemical entities is not a new phenomenon. For thousands of years, plant products have been used in ancient and prophetic medicine. However, recent published research is also gaining momentum in the modern scientific world.
Medicinal Boswellia Species (Frankincense), has been used for centuries in: cosmetics, medicines, inflammatory diseases and chronic pain. The bioactive compound in Frankincense has the scientific name “boswellic acids” and possesses the following chemical formula, C32H52O4. The main acid that inhibits pro inflammatory enzymes is 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-ß-boswellic acid (AKBA).
Leukotrienes, are mediator chemicals produced by the body and can cause; inflammation, free radical damage, autoimmune responses and psoriasis. Boswellia blocks the synthesis of leukotrienes, inhibiting inflammation and shrinking the inflamed tissue.
The resins of Boswellia carteri, have been used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory diseases.
Medicinal commiphora myrrha (Myrrh), is an aromatic gum resin and has been shown to exhibit the following properties: analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-parasitic properties.
Medicinal piper nigrum L, has been known to reduce acute inflammation and possesses the following properties: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties.
Nigella Sativa, is widely used throughout the world as a medicinal plant and has shown to possess many therapeutic properties such as: anti-diabetic, renal-protective, hepato-protective, anti-cancer and anti-microbial. The therapeutic benefits can be attributed to several bioactive compounds present in the blackseed, such as: thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone and carvacrol.
Organic Olea Europaea, is extracted from olives and possesses biologically active phenolic compounds. It has been used for hundreds of years to combat many conditions and is known to possess the following properties: anti-inflammatory, cardio-protective, anti-microbial, hypotensive and antihyperglycemic.
Medicinal Ricinus Communis, Is a unique unsaturated fatty acid, ricinoleic acid found in castor oil exhibits many therapeutic benefits. Castor oil improves immune function via the lymphatic system, increases blood circulation, eases constipation and increases hair growth. It also possesses antifungal properties that kill ringworm and fungal infections.
Organic Argania spinosa L, is a plant oil produced from the kernels of an argan tree. It is high in vitamin A, vitamin E, omega fatty acids and linoleic acid. The therapeutic properties of Argan oil are: boosts cell production, promotes healthy skin, promotes healthy hair and eases inflammation.
Organic Persea Americana, is an oil pressed from the avocado fruit. It contains: vitamin E, essential fatty acids, oleic acid. According to published research, avocado oil is known to increase skin collagen, reduce inflammation and act as an anti-bacterial agent.
Organic Lavendula, is known to have many therapeutic properties such as: treating parasitic infections, neuroprotective, migraines, anticonvulsant, burns and is known for it’s relaxation properties. It has also been reported to be useful in the treatment of pain and cognition enhancement. The main constituents of lavender are: linalool, linalyl acetate, 1,8-cineole B-ocimene, terpinen-4-ol, and camphor.
Medicinal Prunus Dulcis, has been used in ancient medicine. Possesses the following properties anti-inflammatory, immune boosting, antioxidants, vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin b-7 (biotin), antibacterial, fungicidal and protects from sun damage. Stronger hair, nourished scalp.
Inflammation
MAYA’S ORGANIC WORLD, focuses primarily on inflammation and the cause and effect of an inflammatory response. Inflammation is the body’s immune reaction to harmful substances, such as viruses, germs and even toxic chemicals. However, there are some diseases that trigger an inflammatory response. Where the body’s protective immune system starts to attack healthy tissue, such diseases are known as autoimmune diseases. Inflammation has the following characteristic signs; joint pain, swelling, pain, redness, joint stiffness, headaches and muscle stiffness.
Once an inflammatory response is triggered, chemicals are released into the affected tissues or blood. Some chemicals cause fluid to leak into the tissues which results in swelling .
Many diseases where there is no specific cure are a result of inflammation, for example psoriasis. The systemic nature of psoriasis is unknown, however it is characterised by inflamed skin and joints. Many patients suffer with excruciating skin sores and psoriatic arthritis. Patients with psoriasis and in-particular severe psoriasis are at increased risk of developing, diabetes, obesity, stroke and cardiovascular disease.
Arthritis is an inflammatory based condition, where conventional medication such as etanercept or methotrexate is used as a treatment. Allopathic medication, has many side effects and a profound effect on the liver and kidneys, there is always a risk associated with the use of allopathic medication. There are many journal articles that claim and discuss the great effects these drugs have on patients. For example methotrexate, methotrexate is an immunosuppressive agent used to treat many diseases in-particular rheumatoid arthritis. However, long term therapy has known to cause a fatty liver and even cirrhosis. Symptoms are usually absent until the damage is done and cirrhosis develops.
To counteract inflammation you need to adopt an anti-inflammatory approach, topically and internally. An anti-inflammatory diet consists of reduced pro- inflammatory foods, for example: red meat, sugar, refined foods and dairy products. An increase in anti-inflammatory food consumption, for example: fruit, spinach, salmon, mackerel, olive oil, walnuts, seeds, cherries, berries various herbs, tuna, flaxseed and broccoli. There is convincing evidence that plant foods contain bioactive compounds that interfere with the inflammatory process.
There has been research done to investigate the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in basil, lemon thyme, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage and thyme. Phenolic compounds in these herbs were investigated using a scientific method known as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Rosmarinic acid, a compound found in all seven compounds was identified. Rosmarinic acid is a major anti-oxidant compound. The presence of rosmarinic acid was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The study showed, rosmarinic acid quenching super oxide radicals. Super oxides are biologically active compounds deployed by the immune system. They are responsible for contributing to many diseases.
Another example of potent anti-inflammatory foods are ginger and garlic. Ginger is known to suppress prostaglandin synthesis by inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2. Ginger is known to modulate biochemical pathways that are responsible in chronic inflammation. In addition a specific extract taken from ginger is known to inhibit the induction of genes involved in the inflammatory process.
Garlic has shown to possess anti-neuro inflammatory. Diallyl trisulfide (DATS) in crushed garlic has shown promising results in treatment for neuro-generative diseases. Garlic is already used medicinally to control microbial infections and heart diseases. Studies have shown the characteristic garlic flavor constituents known as organo sulfur compounds (OSC) are potent. These compounds are at their highest potency when garlic is in its raw state. However cooking garlic causes allinase inactivation, blocking OSC formation, which is related to garlics reduced bioactivity (anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory).
Spices are also known to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric, for many years has been known to exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Research has shown that curcumin (primary constituent of turmeric) reacts with numerous molecular targets involved in inflammation. Furthermore, research shows turmeric acts as a therapeutic agent.
